"That last 20 minutes seemed to go on forever," Sutton said at the end of his ordeal. "The record has stood unchallenged for seven years and I knew how hard it would be. I'm just grateful for all the support I had around me today and that's what got me through in the end."
The world record judging panel praised the standard of Sutton's work, giving him an overall quality rating of 10.99 and with every sheep shorn being included in the tally. "To shear 839 without even one disqualification is an amazing effort and we congratulate Rodney on his workmanship," said chief judge, Don Morrison of Christchurch.

Sutton's record-breaking day gives him a unique place in world shearing history as the only man to hold individual, two-stand and three-stand records at the same time. A year ago to the day, he and partner Nigel Brown shore 1637 at Rangipo, to break the previous mark of 1603 by MacDonald and David Fagan in 1989.
Sutton, Barton Hadfield and Steven Stoney established a three-stand record of 1933 lambs at Taihape in 1997
Rod is also the current World 9 hour Ewe record holder of 721, breaking a 10 year old record held by Darin Forde
